BodyLove delivers crucial health education information in an innovative way: through a radio soap opera. Reaching underserved African-Americans throughout Alabama and other southern states, BodyLove uses an entertaining and educational radio drama format to promote healthier living among those with limited access to health resources. The brainchild of a public-health professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, BodyLove delivers much-needed health information to those at high risk for diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and other chronic conditions.
Working with MissionWise, BodyLove was able to form an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, separate from the University of Alabama. We helped them to establish an independent office; develop a focused, attainable business plan; and begin the process of obtaining trademark and copyright protection. With our help, BodyLove has generated new revenues—including unrestricted grant funds from local philanthropies and foundations, plus earned income from advertising, sponsorships, consulting services, and episode sales. What’s more, they hired a part-time project manager, recruited a diverse board, and created a volunteer network.
BodyLove is now an independent organization that is well on its way to building a strong plan, a sustainable budget, and a staff capable of building on this momentum.
